The Crochet Love Hat for Valentine's Day - Free Crochet Pattern (2024)

This post includes affiliate links.

The Crochet Love Hat Pattern uses waistcoat aka crochet knit stitch. It is an easy free hat pattern and you can change into a messy bun hat.

I am so excited to publish another pattern using the waistcoat stitch.

You probably noticed I am in love with this trending stitch. I also love combining trends.

So, this pattern not only shows how to make it into a hat (with pom-pom), but also you can make it into a beanie, messy bun hat, neck warmer, or even a kittycat hat. YAY!!

So many options, all in one pattern (ad-free pdf download link is on the bottom).

And on top of that this LOVE HAT shows small hearts (V’s) growing in amount towards the top. So you have a transition from pink to red as a gradient.

The Crochet Love Hat for Valentine's Day - Free Crochet Pattern (1)

So pretty. So perfect for Valentine’s Day.

And because I included a repeat in the pattern, you can easily adjust to different hat sizes.

In order to understand the waistcoat stitch, please click HERE (leads to you to one of my latest post explaining the stitch).

I designed the pattern for a adult/teen head. But you can adjust to make it bigger and smaller.

The pattern includes a specific stitch repeats/multiplesthat can be changed for the size of the hat.

I used a 5.0mm hook for the pattern. I also used the Caron Simple Soft which you can getHEREwhich leads you to Michael’s.

Thank you for supporting me and my page. Using my affiliate links, visiting my page and purchasing my patterns supports me.

It also gives me the ability to provide you with more you already love: homemade crafts, such as crochet patterns! Thank you?

You will need:

  • 5.0mm hook
  • Tapestry needle and scissors
  • Worsted weighted yarn, I used Caron Simply Soft in color watermelon (COLOR A) which is 315yds/288m in 170.1g, and Caron Simply Soft in color red (COLOR B) which is 315yds/288m in 170.1g

Gauge:

4 wst x 4 rows = 1 square inch

Stitches used (click for video tutorial):

HERE is a post I created explaining the stitch in pictures. But the link to the video above is clearer and in my opinion, easier to understand.

NOTE: These instructions are for a teen/adult head. But you could make it smaller or larger by just stopping earlier or extend it more.

You can also use it as a messy bun/ponytail beanie by closing the hole temporarily or permanently, just a bit.

If you don’t do it permanently, then you can always change it back and forth. In fact, I even use it as a neck warmer/scarf sometimes.

In order to change the size of the given pattern, the first thing you need to know is the head circumference of the person you are making the hat for.

Furthermore, you will also need to know the height of hat that you can make bigger too.

Depending on whether you want the hat to be snug on the top of the head or be slouchy (just add more red yarn rows to extend it).

Crochet Love Hat Instructions:

HAT BRIM:

With color A and a 5.0mm hook make a chain of 10 chains

Row 1: 1 hdc the second chain from the hook, 1 hdc in each stitch across, ch 1, turn (9 sts)

Row 2: *1 hdc in the 3rd loop behind the V which in your perspective is actually the first loop you see, repeat from * till the end, ch 1, turn (9 sts) This video(also shown on the bottom of this pattern) shows exactly how to do that.

Row 3: 1 hdc in the BLO in every stitch till the end of the row, ch 1, turn (9sts)

Row 4-49: repeat rows 2-3

Feel free to extend or shorten the brim according to the head circumference of the person wearing it in the end.

Fold the brim band in half (wrong side out). Connect the ends by slip stitching them together to make a circle. Then turn the brim right side out again.

Do NOT cut the yarn, continue below.

CROCHET LOVE HAT:

Round 1: Using sc, crochet 69 stitches all around (you can increase or decrease the amount, but keep in mind that the heart pattern requires a 6 stitch repeat, meaning the pattern is a multiple of 6 stitches, and since there is a shift to the left for the red hearts, you will need 3 less stitches, so if you have a multiple of 6 being 72, subtract 3 for the shift having 69 stitches all around), DO NOT sl st to the first sc of that round! Just continue now with the written repeat below.

Starting round 2, use the waistcoat stitch from now on! USE A STITCH MARKER SO YOU KNOW WHEN TO CHANGE TO A DIFFERENT PATTERN!

Rounds 2-9: For the 6 stitch repeat, crochet *5 wst in color A, then 1 wst in color B (finishing stitch with color A), repeat from * all around, never do a sl st

Rounds 10: For the 4 stitch repeat, crochet *3 wst in color A, then 1 wst in color B (finishing stitch with color A), repeat from * all around, the last 1 stitches are in color A, then us start with round 11, never do a sl st

Round 11: 1 wst in color A, then 1 wst in B (finishing stitch with color A), then *3 wst in color A, then 1 wst in color B (finishing stitch with color A), repeat from * all around, never do a sl st

Round 12: 1 wst in color B (finishing stitch with color A), 2 wst in color A, 1 wst in color B (finishing stitch with color A), *3 wst in color A, then 1 wst in color B (finishing stitch with color A), repeat from * all around, never do a sl st

Round 13-17: repeat rounds 11 and 12, the hearts in color B should be shifted that one heart should be in between 2 hearts in row up (does not happen during the beginning or end of the round, see picture below

The Crochet Love Hat for Valentine's Day - Free Crochet Pattern (7)

Round 18- 25: For the 2 stitch repeat, crochet *1 wst in color A, then 1 wst in color B (finishing stitch with color A), repeat from * all around, never do a sl st

Round 26-33: ONLY USE COLOR B (drop color A completely), crochet 1 wst all around, after row 33, sl st to finish, fasten off and weave in the ends.

The amount of rows you need to do depend on whether you make it for an adult/teen or a different size.

Now, you need to choose. Do you want it to be a messy bun hat? A neck warmer (do not have to do anything, you are done now) or a beanie? Maybe a hat with pom-pom, or a puss*cat hat?

On the next pages you will see how to make them into a messy bun beanie, just a beanie, hat with pom-pom or a puss*cat hat

How to change the colors using the waistcoat stitch:

Pictures below are just to show you how to change colors, ignore the pattern shown (the pattern below is not the same as for the The Love Hat!).

In the picture below, the dark red would be the red in the hat pattern and the green would be the watermelon in the hat pattern. So you can see the first loop is red, but the stitch is finished with green (watermelon for the hat).

How to close the Crochet Love Hat:

Then fasten off. Yarn can now be sewn/weaved thru every 4th red heart of the last row. Then turn the hat inside out and pull tight to close the hole.

Knot it closed (unless you would like to use it as a messy hat bun. Then use a string that you like to be seen and close the hole just a little bit).

Now you can also add a pom-pom for which I have a tutorial HERE if you need one. Enjoy your new hat!

To make it into a puss*cat Hat:

Turn the hat inside out. Sew the top closed (yellow line below), then turn it right side out again.

Sew diagonally (white line below) by the corners to create ears. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

WAISTCOAT STITCH TUTORIAL:

This pattern uses a special stitch that I call the waistcoat AKA knit stitch. Don’t be scared about the way it sounds. It is actually very easy and once you master it, it is very fast to create.

I have below two videos that can help you with the stitch. The first video is not a full tutorial, only helps to learn the stitch.

KEEP TENSION IN MIND (KEEP IT LOOSE)!! The second video is how I made the Swirly Heart Hat exactly.
